A locally owned cafe in the heart of Kadina.
Cracked Pepper sits on Taylor Street, right in the middle of town. Inside it is small and warm and usually busy. Out the back is the part people do not expect: a courtyard walled in genuine hessian coffee sacks, with timber tables, a bit of greenery and shade over the top.
Nat Hewett runs it. When she took the place on she made a point of keeping what already worked, and said so plainly.

An all day menu, plus whatever came out this morning.
Pastries, sweets, frappes, coffees, teas, wraps and sandwiches, and a fair bit more besides. Eat in or take it with you.
Breakfast, all day
The big breakfast is the one people come back for: bacon, sausage, eggs your way, a hash brown, grilled tomato, baked beans, relish and toast. There is a vegetarian version too, and it comes with the house chutney.
Sandwiches, rolls and burgers
Steak sandwiches on Turkish bread stacked properly. Burgers with chips in the basket. Chicken sandwiches packed with fresh vegetables. Wraps and filled rolls to take with you, boxed up if you are feeding a few.
Soups, jackets and the lunch board
Pumpkin soup with cheesy toast when the weather turns. Baked potatoes loaded with coleslaw, ham and beetroot. Sweet potato fries on the side. What is on changes, so the board by the counter is the honest answer.
The sweet cabinet
Vanilla slice, lemon slice, coconut sponge roll, pastries and whatever else has come out that morning. Best decided in person, with a coffee already on the table.
Juice with our name on the bottle.
Cold pressed and bottled for the fridge, so you can grab one on the way past. The Immunity one is the pick of them.

There are smoothies too, and now a machine that will make you a coffee in a can to take with you.
The courtyard is the bit nobody expects.
The walls are hung with the real thing: hessian sacks that carried green coffee beans from Papua New Guinea, Brazil and Costa Rica before they got here. Timber tables, a roof over most of it, plants in the corners.
There is a small table and a few little chairs down one end for the kids, which is the difference between drinking your coffee and drinking your coffee hot.
And the wall next door is part of the Kadina Art Trail, so you get a mural with your breakfast.
We got tired of filling bins.
Since Nat took over, the amount of waste leaving this kitchen every week has dropped a long way, and it keeps dropping. None of it is complicated. It is mostly just deciding to bother.
Bring your keep cup. We would rather fill that than hand you another one.
Food scraps become mulch
A machine takes the day's scraps and turns the lot into mulch within twenty four hours. Nothing goes out the back in a bin bag.
Soft plastics go back
All the plastic wrap goes to Woolworths rather than to landfill.
Silicone instead of cling film
Fresh goods live in reusable silicone pouches that get sanitised between uses, so the plastic never gets bought in the first place.
Cartons and caps to YP Recycling
Milk cartons and bottle caps end up down the road at YP Recycling.

We had breakfast here last week. OMG. What a cracker. We could only score this 10/10. The big breaky is very good value for money. The girls are so lovely & friendly. We will definitely be back before we leave. Thank you.

It's cozy and clean, and the ladies working here are kind and friendly. I ordered chicken sandwiches and they were absolutely delicious! Fresh, with lots of vegetables, and reasonably priced.
Had yummy vegetarian breakfast with delishious chutney. Great friendly service and good coffee. Well done all.
